Safety in Aerospace and avionics

This sector has specific issues that they face due to ROHS exemption, harsh environment, vibration and obsolescence. Find out how Retronix can assist you.

The aerospace industry is technically complex with products that push the limits of technology

Many aerospace systems rely on electronic parts that are no longer produced by the original manufacturer or sold by their authorized distributors. That reliance is based, in part, on the long life cycles of these systems.

An electronic part may be, manufactured for two years, but many aerospace systems which use these parts may be in service for more than two decades. Older components often need electronic component test & retinning to avoid solderability issues like catastrophic tin whiskers. These high-reliability industries are critically dependant on a technology that obsoletes itself every few years (or faster), is made in un-secure locations and over which it has no market share influence.

To source scarce parts, purchasers in the avionics & aerospace industries often buy from independent distributors or brokers. This introduces a high risk of faulty or counterfeit components being acquired.

Retronix’s testing laboratory detects counterfeit and faulty parts and prevents them from being acquired. When we reclaim the devices from authentic PCBs, safe, reliable and tested ICs can be sourced instead of taking the risk associated with non-franchised brokers. Any ICs we source will have been processed properly, have no tin whisker issues and will utimately be functional.

Retronix have various solutions to help your business but can also offer bespoke services. Contact the team today to discuss your options.

thermal expansion issues

Avionics and aerospace demand a lot out of their components since they are subject to vigorous atmospheric extremes. Vibration, shock, quick temperature variances and pressure are some of the elements that the assemblies experience. This leads to early life failure, shorts and fractures in solder joints which could be catastrophic for such critical applications.

Retronix has worked with top aerospace organisations to devise a solution that increases the cycles before failure by over ten times.

Obsolescence Services

Many high-reliability systems rely on electronic parts that are no longer produced by the original manufacturer or sold by their authorized distributors.

That reliance is based, in part, on the long life cycles of these systems. So if a component is no longer available from normal sources, what options are there? Many high-reliability components are used on multiple systems, so can sometimes be found on unused, but obsolete PCBs within the system manufacturer themselves.

These components are known and have had zero hours of use, so often recovering them is a better option than buying supposedly “brand new” components from the grey market Retronix utilises a unique process of component recovery that avoids reflow cycles.

IC TESTS

With obsolescence and allocation issues prevailing in the market, the probability of counterfeit devices being introduced into supply chains are high. Safeguard your supply chains with a suite of in-house Retronix IC tests.
