The Traditional Method
The Traditional Method results in a lot of administration inefficiencies and higher costs :
- The OEM/CEM places an order with its authorised IC supplier; forced to purchase it in Lead Free format, as distributors stock lead-free IC’s.
- The IC Supplier then sends the entire parts list (lead free) to the OEM/CEM; who then have to record it in the system as received corresponding to the part number assigned.
- The OEM/CEM will then send it to a certified Alloy Conversion company like Retronix to convert these parts from Lead Free to Lead.
- Once the conversion is done Retronix assign a new part number to each device (which are now lead solder parts) and send it back to the OEM/CEM; they have an entirely new parts list number to register in and this adds to administration inefficiencies, time and therefore takes the cost up.

- The full conversion process is taken care of by Retronix, who work directly with the IC Supplier, to an agreed understanding with the OEM/CEM.
- The parts once converted are supplied to the OEM/CEM with the parts list corresponding to the Leaded Parts.

The OEM/CEM require a batch of electronic components in Lead solder format. In the highly competitive component supply industry the High Reliability companies will procure the IC’s from the supplier which give the best option with reference to credibility and product specifications.
IC suppliers can work with Retronix for all the component alloy conversion requirements as and when requested by the High Reliability customer, therefore giving an unique competitive advantage of being able to offer Lead Solder components directly.
We can assist with alloy conversion, component upscaling and component testing to allow this sector to increase its offerings into the marketplace. For example, a customer may request for a component supplier to source an industrial-rated non-ROHS device. However, all that is available is the commercially rated ROHS device.
We can offer upscaling to identify the devices that will meet the industrial requirements and then alloy convert all that pass. This allows our component distributor customer to supply their end customers with what they require and avoiding a ‘no-bid’ scenario. We also act as an independent test house between the component supplier and their end customers.
