ionic contamination Test

The ionic residue that remains after PCB manufacturing and soldering can affect the reliability of an assembly. In a humid environment, ionic contaminants can cause problems such as shorting between conductors by electrolytic dendrite growth, corrosion that erodes the conductors themselves, or loss of insulation.

The Ionic Contamination test method is acknowledged as a critical quality and process control tool. The International Standard IPC -J-STD001 states that assemblies need to be cleaned to a value of <1.5µg/cm2 of NaCl equivalence. Our Retronix Ionic Test follows a strict process:

  • Measurement of ionic contamination is carried out by immersing a sample in a test solution to dissolve any contaminants.
  • The dissolved ionic substances will cause a change in conductivity of the test solution – this change is measured and converted into a contamination value expressed as <1.5µg/cm2 of NaCl equivalence.
  • Retronix produce a full report for our customers which details the contamination value, the type of device and sample size.,
